Memorial to the Named & the Faceless is a testimony to everyday people: those who don’t necessarily care to be monumentalized, yet who might quietly enjoy finding there own name emblazoned across a wall or a floor. The project began when I chanced upon a knitted jumper with a name-tape stubbornly clinging to the collar in a local charity shop. This reference to an identifiable past was intriguing - from complete anonymity, a former existence was suggested.

A pattern is drawn up for the item of clothing, based on the text in the original name-tape. Some name-tapes are machine-stitched, some are handwritten and others are printed: the design of the knitted text reflects this. Each item of clothing is ‘un-knitted’ and then re-knitted following this pattern. The size of the work is dictated by the amount of wool used to knit the original garment: the bigger the item of clothing, the bigger the text-piece.   Exhibited at: Short Stories, Färgfabriken, Stockholm; Moment, Falmouth Arts Centre, Cornwall; The Show, Royal College of Art, London.
